Brexit day has come and gone, but there is still uncertainty about how it will affect many areas of our lives, including driving to, and within, the EU from the UK.
Here at Bayfield Vehicle Hire, we offer European car hire from the UK, so we thought we’d share an update on the current situation to help drivers prepare for possible changes.
Here’s what we know so far:
No Changes Until 2021
The good news is that the government has confirmed that any changes to UK licence holders driving in the EU will not happen until the end of 2020. On their website they state:
“The rules for driving, passports, EHIC cards, pet travel and more may change from 1 January 2021.”
We recommend you keep checking the official government site to find out what steps you can take to ensure you can travel as planned next year. Make sure you check in with your insurer too, as they will be able to advise you on changes to your policy or EU regulations.
Different Rules for Different Countries?
It’s possible that different EU and EEA countries will have their own rules for using UK driving licences. Make sure you follow government guidance to be sure you have the correct paperwork, and you can legally drive in the countries you plan to visit.
It’s also possible you will also need an international driving permit in some countries. You can buy these permits from your local post office.
Will I Need a Green Card?
The general consensus is that it is likely you will need a Green card to drive in Europe after Brexit.
Green Cards are provided by insurers and prove that you are adequately insured to drive abroad.
Top tip – it is anticipated that the demand for Green Cards will be extremely high as the end of 2020 nears, so if you are planning a trip to the EU, contact your insurer sooner rather than later to ensure you receive yours in time, and double-check the insurance level you have for driving abroad.
